Acne Scar Treatment

As if our efforts to get rid of acne were not challenging enough, once we do get rid of it, we are often left with unsightly scars to remind us of what we've been through. Acne scars come in many different forms. From icepick scars to rolling scars, the effect is the same: it isn't the face we had before we battled acne.

Treatments for acne scars range from topical treatments to laser surgery. Results often depend on the type of scar, skin type, and skill of the dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Types of Acne Scars

Icepick scars are so named because the skin looks as if it has been jabbed with an icepick. Though they are small in circumference, they extend deep into the skin and are therefore difficult to treat.

Boxcar scars are depressed scars that can be either shallow or deep. Whereas icepick scars narrow at the base, boxcar scars are usually uniform in size from top to bottom. Shallow boxcar scars are easier to treat than deep ones.

Rolling scars occur when sections of the top layer of skin are pulled down by subcutaneous fibrous bands. This creates an appearance of "rolling" skin like waves. These are usually treated by disconnecting the fibrous bands that are pulling them down.
