New Topic Blogs and an Invitation for Contributors

You may have noticed we've added several new topic blogs. Each blog has several contributors, including myself, who will post interesting news stories as well as commentary and feature articles on topics such as bone health, children's health, celebrity health, cancer, lung health, and more. Our latest additions are Weird Health News and Prescription Drug Watch.

In the spirit of Health Diaries being a health site predominantly "by the people and the patients" rather than medical professionals, all of these blogs feature commentary on health topics by real people. We never give out medical advice but we do express our opinions! If you'd like to apply to be a contributor to our topic blogs or to be a "guest writer" for a day, send an e-mail to editor AT healthdiaries.com.

Got Bones?

May is Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month and in honor of that, we've launched a bone health blog called Got Bones?

In this collaborative blog, we'll be talking about bone health for both men and women, with links to news stories, interviews, and other information. We'll go beyond the news stories to talk about the latest research as well as talk about the different treatments for osteoporosis. We'll also give our opinions on these topics.

Anyone who has bones is invited to contribute and comment. We'd love to have several contributors. Oh, and if you don't have bones you might want to have that checked!

New Look and New Blogs

Health Diaries is undergoing a bit of a makeover in time for Spring. The site should be easier to navigate and more user-friendly. The change is still in progress so some pages may not be updated with the new features yet. I expect the changes to be finished by the end of the week.

We also have new writers today on the topics of weight loss, hip replacement, and trichotillomania. Welcome Ben, Chas, and Kat!

New Writers on Raw Food and Lymphoma

I'm pleased to welcome two new writers to the site. Mara will be writing about eating a raw food diet in Journey to a 95% Raw Diet and Marilyn will be writing about her battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma using an alternative treatment in Lymphomaniac. Look out for several more new writers this week as well.

Got News?

If you ever see an interesting health or diet-related news story that hasn't been posted on the site or if you see an interesting health-related post or article on another site that you think deserves a mention, send the link to editor (AT) healthdiaries.com and we'll consider posting it.

Record Your Side Effects

In the coming week or so I'll be adding a place where you can record your side effects from different medications. While most other sites print the "most common" side effects, it is befitting a site like Health Diaries, where personal experience is key, to create a section where people can post about the side effects they are experiencing. Before I launch the section, I'd like to have a few experiences to "get it started." Send your prescription medication experiences, good or bad, to editor AT healthdiaries.com. (Remember to replace the "AT" with @ - I post the email address like this to avoid spam to that email address).

Also, I'd like to remind you that you are all invited to submit health and fitness-related articles for publication on the site. Articles must not have been previously published and must be about your first-person experiences. We've received several great articles and I'll be adding them to their appropriate topics in the coming days and weeks. Tell us your experiences with medications, experiences with alternative treatments like acupuncture, or anything else you feel would be of value and interest to our readers. Email your submissions to editor AT healthdiaries.com.

Hope you're all having a great start to the New Year! The new member area is just about ready ... the wait is definitely worth it, I promise!

Still Alive!

I survived my food poisoning and then caught a cold, but I'm still alive! The new Member Area will be up as soon as I fix a thing or two. There's lots of new stuff happening on the site that will be up by the new year.

Food Poisoning

I'm still working on the new Members' Area, so I've opened the old area for posting until I finish. I came down with food poisoning this weekend and haven't been able to finish the upgrade. I plan to have it up by late Sunday night or Monday. It seems that people are posting despite my messages here because they haven't refreshed their browsers to see that the member area is down, so I think this post is moot!

Still Upgrading the System

I'm still working on the upgrade. The Member Area is still down for maintenance. Somehow Pilgrim and Elizabeth managed to sneak in the back entrance and make posts. Speaking of Elizabeth, she is still being bombarded with posts from people who think she is the psychic Sylvia Browne. Here's one recent comment she received:

have a good friend that was murdered May of this year. the man that did it confessed and is in jail.the police asked him where the body was and he told them where but they still cannot find him,he has been weighted down in water.they looked for two days and stopped. i live in jackson,tn. he is supposed to be in the westover area, his name is Reymond "popeye" Thomas and he was either 32 or 33 years old. Medium build, blonde hair. if you could do anything to help find him and put his body to rest, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you Lynn

Yikes! I'm not sure why people think she is Sylvia Browne. Nothing on her blog suggests anything of the kind.

View all the Sylvia Browne comments.

System Maintenance

The Members' Area will be down for the next 24 hours while I upgrade the blogging software and make the Members' Area sparkly and new. It should be back up by 8am Friday at the latest.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! We're working on a lot of exciting projects for Health Diaries that should be going "live" in the next week or two. Look out for several great new diaries as well.

Readers' Choice

I'm pleased to announce that the Reader's Choice winner for the months of September/October is Pilgrim's Journey. Pilgrim has been with us since the beginning and is one of our most frequent posters. She has readers and fans around the world who appreciate her candor and have learned a lot from her story. Congratulations, Pilgrim!

The next voting period will go through the month of November, so be sure to get your votes in! Email readerschoice AT healthdiaries.com with your choice.

Health News Has Been Revamped

I'm late with this month's Reader's Choice award. So much has been happening so I'm going to keep voting open until the end of October. It's better to have it go from the 1st of the month, anyway. What's new on the site? The health news section has been completely revamped. The topic categories are still being fixed up and overhauled as well.

I'll write again this week with more news. In the meantime, send in your last minute Reader's Choice votes!

Reader's Choice Award for August

I'm pleased to announce that the winner of the Reader's Choice Award for the month of August is Myomectomy or Hysterectomy, by Elizabeth M. It's no surprise that Elizabeth's diary has been chosen by readers - her informative posts cover not only her own health issues, but go one step further by linking to relevant news stories and articles. Elizabeth has been with us since June 2004 when we first began publishing and she has built up a large reader base, with new people discovering her blog on a daily basis. She has spared no detail in the coverage of her hysterectomy and the recovery process and has helped many other women learn what to expect.

We're proud to say she's part of the Health Diaries network!

Elizabeth will receive a $25 Amazon gift certificate and will be featured on the Health Diaries homepage in the Reader's Choice box from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.

Remember to vote for your favorite blog for September by sending an email to readerschoice@healthdiaries.com! Votes for September will be accepted until Sept 30, with the results announced on October 15th.

One-Time Articles

In addition to blogs, we are going to start publishing one-time first-person health stories. There are so many stories that are important to share but that don't really fit into the blog or diary format. The one-time article option is also good for those who are no longer living with something and who want to share their story of survival and recovery or for those who have a blog elsewhere and don't want to start another one. I'll be updating the sign-up page in the next week so people can choose one format or the other when they apply.

In the meantime, if you have an article you'd like to submit, you can send it to me at editor@healthdiaries.com.

Readers' Choice

If you'd like to nominate a diary on the site for the Readers' Choice Award, send us an e-mail. The person with the most votes by the end of August will be featured on the home page in September and will receive a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Only one nomination per person. Because I hadn't officially announced it in this blog, all votes from July will be counted in the August vote.

Food Blog

I've set up a new collaborative food blog called Eat This! that will focus on food in relation to health and wellness. It will include articles, recipes, news stories, and more. If you'd like to write food articles to be published in Eat This! you can e-mail me and let me know. Please note that unlike the diaries, Eat This! is an edited blog and all submissions will go through an editing process before being published. You are also invited to submit recipes. You will receive a link back to your own blog or website if desired. If you have celiac disease or other food allergies that force you into a restricted diet, we'd love to know about the recipes you have developed. If you are trying to lose weight, we'd love to know which recipes have helped you shed the pounds. Well, you get the idea.

Eat This! is the first in a series of topical and informational blogs we have planned that will complement the first-person health diaries that form the foundation of the site.
