Thimerosol

The allergies pretty much took a backseat to the quest for the anxiety disorder diagnosis.

I did go to a dermatologist and he did some skin testing on my back. I ended up with one huge welt...allergic to thimerosol, ie. mercury. At that time thimerosol used to be in a lot more than it is today. It was in contact lense solutions and mascara etc. as a preservative. So I basically just changed brands. The only other problem was that I had a lot of fillings. The silver amalgams in your mouth are mercury.

I thought about it for a long time. Should I have my fillings out? Because I didn't know what was wrong with me I thought I really didn't have much choice. Maybe it would make me better. If I hadn't been actually allergic I may not have done it. I think the American Dental Association is still saying they think they are safe and you don't need to have them out unless you have an allergy. But I also believe they are banned in some other countries.

I am not a big fan of dentists (who is?) so you can tell how desperate I was to feel better. It was a horrible month of torture sitting in that dental chair having all the metal fillings replaced with composites.

And guess what! I don't think it ever helped. I didn't feel any better and I still didn't know what was wrong with me. Oh well, according to some doctors it may help my overall health down the road. After reading some of the articles on what mercury can cause I would never put another silver filling in my mouth.

Thimerosol is also in flu shots and tetanus shots. I heard the first from a doctor on T.V. "Don't have a flu shot if you're allergic to eggs or mercury." My doctor didn't even know about the tetanus shots. My husband was having one and I had heard that it might be in there so I asked the nurse if I could see the paper that comes with the serum. So my tetanus shots are not up to date, but I guess if I really needed one I could do it without too much problem. I'd probably just feel lousy.

The tears are tough, but for most parents, the sting of a child's vaccination shot is nothing more than a routine growing pain. An increasing number of parents, however, are concerned that MMR vaccines may contain a hidden danger. In Arkansas, 90% of children aged 19 to 35 months receive vaccinations to prevent measles, mumps and rubella. The potentially hidden danger, a preservative which is tied to an increasing number of children diagnosed with autism. In a first health special investigation, FOX 16's Jennifer Akers reports.

Brandon and Pam Westbrook say the pain they've endured over the past few years has been intense. Their nightmare began when their son Emmitt, now five years old, started acting distant and unresponsive. Characteristics Emmitt never displayed before. "It was like a hit in the gut, you don't know what it is," said Pam Westbrook. That's when the Westbrooks' had a bombshell dropped on them by their doctor. "When he said autism, I was clueless, I thought of Rainman, I said that's not Emmitt," said Pam Westbrook. Autism, it's a neurological disorder that strikes children, children like Emmitt. The Westbrooks say they knew something was wrong, after Brandon came back from a brief, one month detachment in the Navy. Right before dad left, Emmitt was given his vaccines. "Emmitt waved goodbye, when he left, he had his one and a half year shots, when he came back, he didn't even recognize Brandon, wouldn't look him in the face, he was totally blank," said Pam Westbrook. "When I got back, he didn't even know me," said Brandon Westbrook. Brandon and Pam have four children. One Year Old Sydney, three year old Joshua, five year old Emmitt, and seven year old Tanner.

The Westbrooks' first thought the vaccines were to blame, when Tanner got his shots, and Emmitt soon after, soon both started having problems. When they linked the shots with all the problems, the Westbrooks stopped Joshua's shots after the first round. As for one year old Sydney, she's socially advanced & healthy. Brandon says, there's a reason. "Sydney never had any shots, never any, and she's already talking, she's a typical one year old," said Brandon Westbrook. So could the vaccines really be to blame? FOX 16 obtained this letter from one of the Westbrooks' doctors, Dr. John Hicks, Medical Director of Pathways Chronic Illness Solutions. He writes, "It is through our experience that we have seen a link to autism when thimerosal has been used as a preservative in vaccines. Thimerosal which contains ethyl mercury, is neurotoxic." The Westbrooks' believe their children developed autism from vaccines their children received before the age of two. They blame the problem on the preservative thimerosal, its added to vaccines to kill off bacteria. It's labeled very toxic, and is about 50% mercury by weight. But, Dr. David Bourne, from the Arkansas Department of Health disagrees with the Westbrooks' and their physician. Because he says the evidence simply isn't there. "We here at the Health Department and the folks at the CDC don't believe there's any link between the vaccines and autism," said Dr. David Bourne. Despite the Health Department and the CDC's position. FOX 16 uncovered a recent study by Columbia University, which shows mice were given vaccines with mercury. Those same mice developed profound brain problems. "We're one of those people, who give your kids as many shots as they need, but you end up finding out, that you hurt them, said Brandon Westbrook. Pam says if you find out thimerosol is in the shots, ask your doctor about your options. Many doctors offer vaccines that don't contain thimerosal. The Westbrooks' say they've been through a nightmare, but through years of therapy, Emmitt is doing better. Now, Pam & Brandon are on a mission to help other families. "The more research we did, the more it felt like God gave us Emmitt to help other people," said Pam Westbrook.

You can't accuse my parent for they took special care on me.
