Please Don't Turn Your Cats into Vegans

Being a vegetarian while living in Europe was hard. In Prague, vegetables are always out of season. The "vegetarian plate" was always just whatever the side vegetables would be on a regular entree. Hence, about five pieces of shredded lettuce and a sprinkling of shriveled carrots. My traveling companions would ask, "Are you sure that's going to be enough?" Um, no, what do you think? It wasn't long after that that I discovered a true Czech staple: fried cheese. I pretty much lived on fried cheese, chocolate, dumplings, and beer for six months.

Paris had no shortage of vegetables. I could go to the farmer's market and get all kinds of fresh veggies. My roommate and I would make elaborate vegetarian meals to accompany the cheap bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau. Besides, we couldn't afford to eat out much in Paris.

In Rome, everything was much easier. Eating out was affordable and there is always something for vegetarians on an Italian menu. Antipasti, pasta, risotto, pizza . . . need I say more? Once, however, I found myself in Calabria in a pizzeria and they didn't have any pizza without meat on the menu, even though cheese pizza (called Margherita pizza) is a staple in Italy. So I asked for pizza without meat on it and the waiter said, "No problem, but ham is okay, right?"

Great answer Anna! I am not a vegetarian, but certainly respect your right to be one without constant comments from people!

Thanks for taking my prior comment down. I was halfway through when I happened to hit the wrong button. What I was saying is that it is refreshing to view comments from a vegetarian who is not trying to convert the world like some born-again evangelist. While I understand why some are vegans, I respectfully remain a carnivore. I find it difficult to co-exist with most vegans as they become repulsed and aggitated by the mere sight of beef, fish and other used-to-be-alive animals. So your diary in refreshing in its humor and realistic approach.

I am Jewish. And eat Kosher meat. When invited to non Jewish homes I say that I do not eat meat and it is simpler. No one mentions Hitler though! But that is because I do not come out and say that I am Jewish. Or maybe eating Kosher meat is the start to no meat as I am (all the time) saying that I do not eat meat and hence I am starting to believe what I say!E.-

Hi, Anna!I've been vegan for a year and a half, and giving up cheese was definately the hardest on me.I've come across some great cheese alternative recipes, though. "How It All Vegan" is a great Vegan Bible (though the follow up "Garden of Vegan" is not as good.) That book includes a lot of great vegan recipes. So does the "New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook," which is old and kind of hard to find. However, I bet Amazon carries it.You can find recipes for Mac and "Cheese" (using Nutritional Yeast, a great B-12 provider), Cheeseless fondue sauce, and more.As for pizza, as a New Yorker, I'm picky. Some pizzarias are carrying a cheese alternative now (Pintaile's Pizza chain in NY is one) and a lot of other restaurants are offering good soy cheeses, too.The Tofutti frozen "cheese" pizza is really good. The cheese actually melts if you put it in the toaster oven. In fact, I've never tried a Tofutti product I don't like, though I try to keep them limited b/c of hydrogenated oils.I keep the "Young, Vegan and Healthy" blog on this site, and invite you to check it out. It's still in introductory phases, but you may find some of the info I'm trying to put out interesting. Please don't think I'm trying to convert you to veganism! But, if you're looking to give up dairy, I'd LOVE to help!

Yup, cats are the only truly carnivorous animals. I believe it is taurine that they need, which cannot be derived from plants.
