Dairy and Weight Loss?

Thanks to everyone who commented and asked how my non-dairy adventure is going. It is now officially not an adventure, but a way of life. It has been 11 months since I had any kind of dairy and I couldn't be happier. Someone asked in a comment how long it was before I saw an improvement in acne after going dairy-free. It took a few months to clear my system of years of dairy. I stopped breaking out in cystic acne right away, but still had smaller spots before my period. These days, I don't even break out before my period. I've also added a lot more fruit and vegetables to my diet and am eating mostly organic.

I wanted to comment on this crime the dairy industry has been perpetuating on the American people. They say eating 3 servings of dairy per day will help you lose weight. I think I commented on this before ... how this is just a transparent ploy to get people to buy more dairy products. Unfortunately, many people buy into these kinds of things.

Well, researchers are now questioning those claims. A few weeks ago, a news story broke all over the mainstream media (Boston Globe article) that questions the statements made by the dairy industry regarding dairy and weight loss.

Of course, they tip-toe around the subject, saying dairy may aid in weight loss because they don't want to offend their friends in the dairy industry who spend so many advertising dollars.

The bottom line is this: you don't need to eat dairy products in order to lose weight. You just need to eat reasonable portions, stay away from fast food, and exercise. It's pretty simple. We don't need to spend more money on processed dairy products.

Apparently, thanks to pressure from the PMRC, Kraft Foods has agreed to stop using the "dairy aids in weight loss" message in their advertising.

It's progress.

I just wanted to say, I loved reading your posts about giving up dairy. I am not (at this time, anyway) a vegetarian, but I recently gave up dairy. I was amazed.

I had suffered health problems from a young age, and been told over and over by doctors there was nothing they could do. I just had to keep trying medications that weren't working.

Then I gave up dairy--that was in August, and I haven't been sick since. The whole time, all I had to do was stop drinking milk--which doctors always complimented me on, saying I was so much healthier for drinking milk than soda!

I think it's horrible what effects the dairy lobby is having on people's health. I have yet to meet anyone who gave up dairy and didn't feel a million times better. Now, we just have to figure out how to get this message out.

An interesting thing (or two) about the dairy and weight loss claim. One is, they say the weight loss only works for people who do not currently consume much dairy, and add another 2 glasses (could be wrong on the number) of milk to their diet a day. Also, the study consisted of only about 30 people, with only 5 men in the study, and 11 total in the high dairy group! Not exactly a population sample. They also reduced their diets by 500 calories a day..hmmm...I guess that wouldn't have anything to do with their weight loss!!

Its amazing the politics that are involved in the selling of food and the dairy industry is no different. In order to boost sales of dairy they put those message out there and try to convince people to drink milk to lose weight.
I too gave up dairy almost a year ago and must say that I have never felt better, I dont get sick anymore, I got my little ones off dairy and they dont get sick much anymore either.

I found the book Safe Food by Marion Nestle a good book as she spoke about many of the things that the industry and government will do to make sure sales stay high. Like what the dairy industry does.It opened my eyes about how the whole industry works.

My mother recently came down with osterporosis and after reading up on it, she learned that consuming milk is not as good for building strong bones as they would like us to believe.

Please be aware that the milk you used to consume, was not what milk could and should be. It's no wonder your poor body reacted to the pasteurised, homogenised, non-food that is sold as milk these days. Wholesome raw milk from many different ruminants has been part of the human diet for thousands of years. The difference between modern factory non-milk and Real, whole, nourishing, raw milk is like (dare I say) chalk and cheese. Please see my post about the benefits of Real milk.

Physicians used to use raw milk as a detox treatment, simultaneously nourishing as detoxifying the system.

It is essential for vegetarians to source B12 from raw milk as raw animal food is the only source of this vital nutrient.
It's worth a look.

took years to get the dairy out? good god! i thought it only took me weeks. but, guess what? i didn't miss it though i used to be cheese and milk crazy! but now i'm soy milk crazy. so far no cheese, no luck finding vegan cheese. :( but the sinusitis is very mild, no more hacking, sniffling, no more pain in my bones and well... my ding dong works better also. LMFAO! sorry, had to add that.

what Nourisher is saying is bogus. people who fall for that myth are asking for trouble. nourisher's ignorance is just the small problem. if you consume any dairy the problems get bigger. hypertension, obesity, liver issues, cholesterol, kidney troubles and severe issues with the pancreas. i wish people like nourisher would zip their minds along with their lips.

There is a problem with our milk though. Our milk os pasturized and homogenized, both which damages the nutrients in the milk and may even clog your arteries.

I think they need to find a way to promote safe, raw milk to the public so that they can get the true benefits of drinking milk. Pasturized milk causes autism and ADHD, as well as type I diabetes.
