Vegan Friendly = IBS Friendly?

I'm at the grocery store and wandering throught the vegan isle of Mac & Trees or Tofurkey. Or I'm at the local Indian restaurant glancing through the vegetarian menu of fried tofu. I walk by Real Food Daily and sample their almond butter spread on carrot bread.
I have it my mind that I have free reign over anything vegan, raw, or vegetarian. As long as it falls in those categories, I don't need to exercise restraint. This forced logic is based on denial. For two years in high school, I told myself that eating 2 bags of BBQ Crunch Tators with mustard and a carton of chocolate milk for breakfast had nothing to do with my sicknesses. If you want something badly, at this point the idea of limited consumption freedom is tempting enough, your mind will reason it to the point where you are able to completely shut out logic.
Logically, I know that processed and fried vegan/veggie food could attack me worse than a 4 oz filet mingon (aka slice of heaven). But that doesn't allow me to retain what little choice I have in my diet.

We need a new strategy (I'm all about strategy). Someone needs to find a better guideline to follow for us busy working professionals who barely have time to sit down and rest let alone cook IBS friendly meals for ourselves. And who in the world wants to eat those IBS friendly meals WITH me? Tofu Creme Brulee for one sounds pathetic while Tofu Creme Brulee for two sounds like there will certainly be no second date.

Hey Christine :),
I'd try that tofu creme' brulee!
You write well (well after reading your bio I see you are a writer, duh).

I put up with some degree of IBS for a couple of years before being dx'd with Fibromyalgia. IBS is common with FMS patients.
Not fun.

My husband is Type I diabetic. He was dx'd at 3 and is 42. He was dx'd 2 years ago with 'Diabetic Gastroparesis' or a paralysis of the digestive system. His stomach has 'dropped lower on the pouchy side' and it doesn't empty as it should. And then the intestines don't do their job of moving stuff down and getting nutrients on the way.

So he is on a very restrictive diet, NO pork, no fibrous meats (steak, roast), no grains, no fresh fruits or veggies. Only well cooked veggies and then never onions, peppers, eggplant(why?), some squash. What does he eat? Anything easy to digest (not too many nutrients)-white bread, yogurt, ground beef, pasta and his mom's (sicilian!) meatballs & sauce,
hamburgers, no lettus, no onion, no tomato, turkey sandwiches, chicken dishes or sandwiches.

And all the while he's on rx antacids, meds to promote stomach emptying, meds to promote 'motility' and meds to flat out cause diahhrea..laxatives.

He's only 43 and is stuck in the morning and after dinner with frequent trips to the bathroom. How humiliating a few seconds difference can be.
And worse it can hit during the day when we are at Walmart(most likely) and he has to walk (which promotes motility) clear across the store without much warning.
It's awful for him.

And with FMS I'm supposed to eat only fresh fruits and veggies and no read meat, just chicken or fish baked or broiled, and no dairy.

And his son, 19, is Type I diabetic also, on a low fat diabetic diet.

We need a live in nutritionist!

I'm glad I read your posts.

I'll try to stay in touch.

Hugs and Blessings, Judy

Veganism is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I hardly think about my IBS now. I went through a period of about 3 months where all I did was think about food and EVERYTHING made me sick. Taking all meat and dairy out of my diet has allowed me to enjoy food again- even lentils! beans! but no nuts... I'd just always stay away from those. There are so many great resources... start with the vegansociety.com.

Going vegan is one of the best things for IBS. I still can't get my severe IBS-c under control but it's less severe on a vegan diet.

I currently eat chicken and fish but want so much to go vegan. Because of my ibs, it would be difficult. I have a problem with soy products as well as dairy also too much insoluble fiber.

My heart breaks for the animals including chickens and fish all of whom have a will to live just like we do. However, I have to ride subways and fear ibs attack. If the subway breaks down which it often does and I need to get to a bathroom fast, what can I do.

Any thoughts on how to do a vegan diet and deal with ibs would be appreciated.

Insoluble fiber can be hard on the gut. It helps to eat small quanties with soluble fiber. When eating insoluble fiber it helps to never eat it on an empty stomache . Always eating soluble fiber with just some insoluble fiber helps. Like for example if your going to eat some oatmeal and a fruit salad for breakfast, make sure you eat the oatmeal first and then the fruit.

My heart breaks for the animals going through torture too. That's why I've been vegan for seven years now. It really is easy to do when you love animals. Before that I was a lacto veggie for 7 years.

Since you said you can't handle soy you can always try rice or almond milk instead of soy milk.

Also drinking lots of herbal tea helps too. Ginger, mint, fennel, and chamomile are really great for the gut. Probiotics at health food stores can work too.
