Mayday! Bowels Bursting!
I stand defeated. Today my IBS won in the battlefield of work. It lanced my bowels until they split, proclaiming itself victorious.
It first led a quiet sneak attack, disguised as tagalong cookies, fried octopus and mayo shrimp. It then struck me in my stomach, the sharp pain shooting down to my legs, and warning of its pending eruption. I tried to hold it in - running back and forth from the solitude of the women's stall - often tripping on my own feet as IBS cramps paralyzed my clumsy gait. Twenty minutes I sat there, waiting for the all clear signal, with many false hopes. As the clock ticked to 3pm (a meeting with the department), I knew that I had to make a run for it. I exited the safe haven of the restrooms and ran to my office, throwing caution to the wind as I yanked the laptop from the outlet and shouted, “Please reschedule the meeting!” I was tricked into thinking IBS has surrendered. I started the car and screeched out of the lot. IBS was back to make me bleed.
For the very first time in my life, I didn’t make it home today.

Hi Christine,
Although I am not an IBS sufferer, I can empathize as a colon cancer survivor. Flare ups can be discouraging not to mention embarrassing. Hang in there and don't give up. GI problems are trial and error so planning is critical. Be sure to tell your doctor about the acute onset of the "attack". I am resolved to eating very limited items when I am at work that I know I tolerate well. Yes, it is monotonous, but it makes my day manageable so I can work effectively. Hope that helps a little. Take care. Walter

Hi Christine,
It hurts to read about you suffering so. I also had IBS, so I know where you are coming from. The misery can be horrible. You should check out the approach that finally cured me after trying everything else. It required a diet change, but having my health back is completely worth it!

Hi,
I came across your blog looking for quickfix solutions (which I'm rapidly beginning to realise do NOT exist...) - I am 17 years old and I haven't mentioned my IBS to any of my friends out of embarrassment, despite it impacting heavily on my social life recently. I just wanted to say thank you for being so open and honest (and at times funny) about how you deal with it and how it affects you. It sounds stupid but it's strangely reassuring to know that other people have been in similar situations (such as the one above)and can talk about it. I hope things are going better for you and you're on the up,
Thanks again,
Philly
