10 Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Last updated on October 3, 2007

Apple cider vinegar, or cider vinegar, is one of the most popular alternative health remedies in use today. It has been used since ancient times as a remedy for many different ailments. Hippocrates is said to have used it as an antibiotic.

Most of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar are anecdotal and have not been scientifically confirmed. We make no claims about any of the health benefits listed below but offer them up as a starting point for further research on your part.

1. When diluted with water 50/50 it is often used as a toner for the face. Caution should be used when applying as cider vinegar is very dangerous to the eyes.

2. A bath of apple cider vinegar is said to reduce the effects of sunburn. The vinegar soaked on a cloth and applied to sunburn may also be used.

3. Many women have tried a douche of apple cider vinegar as a remedy for yeast infections. However, many others claim that vinegar causes or worsens yeast infections. Some say it depends on the brand used.

4. There are many claims that apple cider vinegar is a powerful weight loss aid. Many people use it in salad dressings or drink a tablespoon diluted in a glass of water once or twice per day.

5. It is said to treat dandruff by destroying the fungus Malassezia furfur and restoring the PH balance of the scalp. Some people recommend applying a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar, applying it to the scalp, and leaving it to dry. Others suggest applying a couple of tablespoons of straight vinegar to the scalp and leaving it on for an hour or two before rinsing.

6. It has long been promoted as a remedy for arthritis. The National Arthritis Foundation says apple cider vinegar has not been proven effective against arthritis but is harmless to try.

7. A reported treatment for warts is to soak the affected area for 20 minutes per day in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water.

8. It is said to be a natural lowerer of bad cholesterol.

9. A teaspoon of cider vinegar in a glass of water per day is said to lower blood pressure.

10. Mother of vinegar, the layer of film that forms on top of the cider, is believed to have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

These ten benefits of apple cider vinegar are just a few of the reported uses for it. The great thing about this natural remedy is how inexpensive it is. If you’re ready to give it a try, we suggest Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar.

Jeff if you want to clear your arteries take 6,000 mgs. of Vitamin C per day and a good multi-vitamin as well, it is the base for the Pauling Therapy, read up on it. I was given 10 yrs. to live after my heart surgery, I read about Linus Pauling’s therapy and started taking Vitamin C and I’m still here. I will send you a couple of links to read to help you out…….Good Luck Jeff!

I read about apple cider vinegar and diabetes in a pamphlet my wife gave me 6 weeks ago. I take 34 units of Levemir (long acting insulin) in the morning. I was also taking 1 unit of Novolog (fast acting insulin) per 15 grams of carbohydrates at meals. I began taking 1 tablespoon of Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar (I tried a bargain brand and it didn’t work as well) at 10 pm every night and for the past 5 weeks, I haven’t needed any Novolog. My glucose levels (taken 4 times a day, are averaging between 78 and 97. I’m actually waiting for ‘the other shoe to drop’, but so far the magic is working.

I did not believe it but after taking Apple Cider Vinegar for a week I could actually walk around with hardly any back pain – I still automatically moaned as I got out of bed or stood up but at the same time thought to myself why did I moan I’m not in pain – BUT A BIG BUT – When I stop taking it (sometimes it causes heartburn and then I have to take half a teaspoon of Bicarb of soda in water which lasts 3 days meaning no more doctors tablets or rennees)Anyway when I stop taking Apple Cider Vinegar after 3 -4 days I can hardly move let alone walk without pain – so I take it again and after 3 days no pain – stop taking it for 3 -4 days and am in agony again – I have done this now on 4 occassions – I just have to remember to take it even if it’s every other day (and rinse my mouth with water to protect my teeth after) I had X-rays and the doctor said that I have worn away the base of my spine from all the heavy lifting – now I try not to carry anything. Anyway A.C.V blooming works and there is no doubt about it – apparently it puts some sort of fluid around your bones. I NOW MAKE MY OWN A.C.V. and will try that. the receipe is simple – keep the skin and core of the apple, not the flesh (make apple pie with the flesh)cover with water put lid or cloth over it and leave at about 16-20 degrees for about 3 weeks, drain and bottle. I am not sure yet how to get the film off the top (the Mother vinegar) and store it or whether it can be stored to add to and start off the next batch. Hope this wasn’t too long a write up.
