Blackstrap Molasses - The Black Goo That's Good for You
Filed under Natural Sweeteners | Comments (12)
Well, I had my first experience with blackstrap molasses. I opened the jar and poured the thick, black goo onto the spoon. It reminded me of some black sludge you'd find at the bottom of an oil barrel. Oh, wait, that's right - blackstrap molasses is the black waste that's left over after regular molasses is made, so it really is the black sludge from the bottom of the barrel! It also made me think of the black secretions oozing out of bubonic plague victims. Not that I've ever seen anyone with actual bubonic plague, but I have a good imagination.
So then I dropped it into a glass of warm water and it quickly dissolved, creating a lovely yellow-brown water the color of which I haven't seen since I had that bad case of food poisoning a year ago.
Disgusted by the color, I bravely took a sip and recoiled at the bitterness. People use this as a sweetener? It was hard getting past the feeling that I was drinking some form of toxic sludge from a Tijuana sewer. I didn't think I could finish it, but I persevered and about halfway through the glass I actually started enjoying it. The bitterness disappeared and I began to notice the sweetness. This is what mind over matter is all about, people. Instead of focusing on how gross it is, just say to yourself: "I am a beautiful and special person and I am drinking something disgusting because I'm worth it!" If you say that over and over, even drinking actual toilet water can be tolerable.
But seriously, folks. It's good for you. Or should I say goo for you?
The best tasting BSM is the organic brand. i used the regular Happy Home brand from my health store and the taste was not great.
I mix half cup water and milk and heat it up. then i add my BMS (1 tbs) and i enjoy it but it took some time and changing to organic.
Add it to coffee. Great flavor!
I've been adding a teaspoon of BSM to my morning health drink that I mix up in the blender for a long time.
Can't even taste it. Lots of good vitamins and nutrients.
Brown some healthy butterfly chicken breast in some of your favorite breading & Olive Oil. When its golden brown place in oven with 1&1/2 teaspoon each of BSM. Cover & place in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes or so according to how long it was fried.
I just know you'll write & thank me. Also you can get creative with meat glazes & use it as the sweet side of the tangy for salad dressings.
It is a definite staple in my kitchen
i have been drinking 1 tb bsm
in half glass hot milk every morning for about a month and
no longer have arthritic pain
in my knees. i was walking with a cane a lot. i actually look forward to the drink which i have just before my first cup of coffee.
I just started using organic BSM a couple of weeks ago since it's supposed to be good for hormonal imbalances. I put about 1/2 & 1/2 ratio of it with water in a saucepan and warm until melted. I have it on the stove top all the time now ready to use,,, drisling on top of salad with apple cider vinegar, in health smoothies, even on scrambled eggs,,, the list is endless.

Use Blackstrap Molassas in your chicken dishes. Also there is a Dark Rum called Blackstrap named "Curzan" that is best taken straight or perhaps with a dash of Grenadine. It too, is often used in cooking because of its powerful flavor.
