Soda May Cause DNA Damage, Cirrhosis, and Parkinson's Disease

An alarming new report says that an ingredient in many sodas, sodium benzoate, may cause DNA damage, cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson's disease, and overall premature aging.
Concerns centre on the safety of E211, known as sodium benzoate, a preservative used for decades by the £74bn global carbonated drinks industry. Sodium benzoate derives from benzoic acid. It occurs naturally in berries, but is used in large quantities to prevent mould in soft drinks such as Sprite, Oasis and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.
Sodium benzoate is listed as sodium benzoate or E211 on labels. It is found in Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Fanta, Sunkist, and other sodas.
Nonetheless, these products will remain on the market and will be consumed in large quantities by children and adults.

I am definately trying to stop or cut back on drinking soda. I currently drink it every day 32-64 oz. Yesterday was the first day that I didn't have any and I bought a big bottle of water instead. I am hooked and it will be a hard habit to break!
my husband and I are both stopping the soda. I stopped and the first week experienced headaches. My husband had 1 regular soda after a week and noticed his Kidney area hurting that same day.
Is this the only study with these findings, or have there been others? Also, diet coke (my vice of choice) contains potassium rather than sodium benzoate. Has that been studied? Interestingly, both my grandmother and her brother died with Parkinson's and both were heavy Pepsi drinkers for as long as I can remember. Hmmm...
I never drank diet, knowng it was very bad, plus I hate the taste. But I didn't know other sodas are that bad. My current soda does not have it, but I am cutting back.

I definitely drink A LOT less soda than I used to. My husband could cut back a bit sometimes, but he doesn't drink it constantly. There's just no nutritional value whatsoever in soda... I'd rather make some sugar free iced tea. Good flavor, and plenty of water. :)
how do producer get away with putting this stuff in our food time and time again. if they were made to test it for longer they might think twice before puting artificial additive into our foods.

it only says 'may' cause. people smoke cigarettes and KNOW that causes cancer. people sunbather and KNOW that causes cancer. people drink alchohol and KNOW that can damage your live if in high quantities and KNOW about alchoholism as facts. will i still drink soda or diet soda because it 'MAY' cause damage? yep. tell me you KNOW , and i'll try to quit but i'm just as hooked on sodas as a smoker is to nicotine, that's a fact.

I haven't voluntarily had diet soda in years...have always had a bad reaction to sugar substitutes. I rarely have regular soda, either, and my kids don't get it at home. However, I have too many friends who drink this stuff all the time!!!
