Iron and Calcium Increase Risk of Lung Cancer

A new study has shown a link between intake of iron and calcium and an increased risk of lung cancer.

The message here for smokers and for former smokers is, don't take large amounts of supplements, particularly those with iron or calcium, unless you have a medical indication for them," warned Christiani. "People tend to take lots of vitamins and minerals thinking that they are good for them. We don't recommend large dietary shifts until these results are confirmed in further studies."

A new study has shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may lower the risk of lung cancer. In addition to not smoking, patients “should be informed that they may further reduce their risk of developing cancer by adopting a diet rich in fruits and vegetables,” states the editorial, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Lung Cancer Has a Strong Genetic Link

Individuals with a mother, sister or other "first-degree" relative with lung cancer are at increased risk of developing the disease, regardless of whether they smoke. Researchers say the finding supports the role of genetics and perhaps a shared environment in the development of lung cancer.
CT Scan for Lung Cancer

If a simple, painless test can find the world's deadliest cancer when it is smaller than a pea - and such a test does indeed exist - shouldn't people who are most at risk have one? Surprisingly, the federal government, American Cancer Society and a raft of cancer specialists say the answer is "no."
