The National Eye Institute recommends a specific combination of vitamins is recommended for people with moderate macular degeneration in order to slow or prevent the progression of the disease. This formula is called the AREDS formula because it is based on results from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study.
The formula consists of the following vitamins:
500 mg vitamin C
400 IU vitamin E
15 mg beta-carotene
80 mg zinc oxide
2 mg copper as cupric oxide
It’s important to note that these vitamins weren’t found to prevent early stage macular degeneration from developing further but only to prevent the intermediate stage of the disease from developing further.
As with any supplement regimen, it’s important to consult with your doctor before starting to make sure the vitamins won’t interfere with any medications you may be taking.
