Lutein is an antioxidant that is essential for eye health. Because so many supplements contain lutein, many people wonder what the side effects of lutein are.
Fortunately, the only known potential side effect is something called carotenodermia, or bronzing of the skin. Thankfully, carotenodermia is totally harmless and reverses itself within a few weeks after the excess consumption of carotenoids has ceased.
A similar side effect is seen in people who consume too many carrots or foods containing beta carotene.
