Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects a person's immune system. In effect, the immune system attacks itself, turning one's own body into the enemy. Like most autoimmune diseases, lupus affects more women than men. In fact, 90% of all cases occur among women. Symptoms of lupus can include severe fatigue, joint and muscle pain, mild to severe facial rashes, dry eyes, mouth sores, chest pain, headaches, weight loss, depression, hair loss, and fever. Any of the internal organs can become involved leading to many of the above symptoms.
