Bacterial Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis is a severe infection of the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain. It may result in brain damage, learning disability, and hearing loss. Some types of bacterial meningitis can be prevented with antibiotics. Viral meningitis is less severe and often resolves on its own. Symptoms of bacterial meningitis may include high fever, stiff neck, headache, headache, nausea, vomiting, photosensitivity, sleepiness, and seizures. In small infants and newborns, the classic symptoms of may not be present.
