AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease that is caused by infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). HIV destroys an infected person's immune system, making it difficult to fight off illnesses and malignancies. HIV is transmitted through contact with an infected person's blood, semen, or vaginal fluids. This can be through a blood transfusion, sharing of infected drug needles, sexual contact, or other situations in which an infected person's bodily fluids enters another person's bloodstream.
